By: Wilber Ortega Painting
From 2000 I started working with acrylics, which I found challenging due to their fast-drying. Simultaneously, acrylics are very uniform and malleable for the finishing processes; above all, they offer flexibility without the risk of cracking.
Wilber Ortega was born in Las Tunas, Cuba, 1970.
As a child, he began drawing the giant machines that turned his family's farm into a desert after his father was convinced to hand over his lands to the cooperative movement. He began his formal studies in painting in 1989, and in 1993 he graduated from the Las Tunas Academy of Plastic Arts, specializing in drawing and painting.
In 1995 he founded the Confluencia Landscape project, which proposes to renew an aesthetic within the theme of nature, giving rise to national events. In the following years, he participated in countless collective and individual projects, events inside and outside Cuba. He currently lives in Colombia, seduced by the great diversity of the Andean landscape. He has received recognition and multiple awards for his creative work. His artworks are in important art museums and private collections in Cuba, France, Italy, England, Germany, Spain, Norway, Canada, Costa Rica, and Colombia.
"I identified with the surrealist movement and the 19th century's symbolism I explored from my school days. For me, it is essential to build meanings that emerge from reality itself. It is another kind of truth that arises from our internal need, where our naked consciousness exists, stimulating the optic organ's sensors and mobilizing man's perceptive activity with the least amount of visual barriers.
I've been tackling the issue of ecology for a long time, the interaction of man with nature, the irrational devastation of the source of life."
"Since I was a child, I have been very observant. The contemplation of the natural scenery has been an inexhaustible source of inspiration for me. Someone said that art is the pleasure of a spirit that penetrates nature, an infinite delight that allows us to see other things and strengthens the limits of my artistic independence. In art, I find the keys and the spring that impulses my mystique towards subjective parallels complemented by the exercise of the imagination."
Although he drew from a very young age, he had never considered the idea of studying or dedicating himself to the arts. A painting teacher encouraged him to apply to the Academy of Plastic Arts in his native province, where he graduated in 1993. His thesis consisted of twelve paintings under the series "A royal road to consciousness."
During the following years, he actively participated in different group exhibitions and landscape events where he obtained several awards. His interest has revolved around a new vision of the landscape and nature's study through large-format murals and other media such as photography.
