“To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place…I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.” – Elliott Erwitt
I often imagine what kind of photo I want to take before I take it and I find this happens when being surrounded by the natural world. I usually feel the most inspired when I see something new or find an opportunity to make something ordinary exciting. I will take a series of photos as the subject can often be unpredictable and will not stop until I capture what I set out for. I will then spend a lot of time editing to create the kind of drama and impact I originally imagined.
I was born in London, England. Having found my creative streak at school and doing well in Art studies, I didn’t feel empowered enough to follow a path in Art. Then, having forged a career in the corporate world, I found myself being drawn to photography more and more with it feeling like a place that I felt most comfortable. After leaving my corporate career behind, I focused fully on learning the art form and became a freelance Photographer. I now know that I am truly where I should be; creating my legacy through photos.
I have been fortunate enough to see the beauty of many places in the world through an extensive amount of travel. It’s in these places that I truly learned how much of a challenge photography can be. It’s often a long waiting game to capture the ideal shot, but I’ve also had to contend with the harsh environment whether that be subzero temperatures, high wind speeds or having to wear layers of heavy clothing. For me, these challenges make being a photographer far more rewarding. It enables another level of storytelling; a story behind creating the image which is often a mystery to the viewer!
I am hugely inspired by the natural world. It feels vast, mysterious and soothing to me. Travel has been a big part of my life and being somewhere unfamiliar allows my imagination to be set free! The short times spent in these places and knowing I may never come back is motivation to make sure I capture the images that I desire! My young daughter has always been my motivation – I see the world differently and notice the little details which I may have missed before she was in my life.
I am a self-taught photographer. It started with film, to compact and when I was able to purchase a DSLR everything changed…I was hooked! I’ve been photographing for many years but decided to take the plunge into full time photography in 2016 and have loved every minute!
