José Gotopo

Individual Artworks

José Gotopo

I am a painter because it is a vocation of solitude. I am a chameleonic painter, who changes color every day.

Creative PROCESS

The drawing is done with fluency and a lot of instinct, the composition arises without prior drawing, without diagrams or sketches. The process is a catharsis where I fight hand to hand with the fabric, applying the colors directly by hand, with spatulas, sponges and brushes.
In the middle of the road, an accident arises that disorients me, I stop, I have a cup of coffee, I look at the painting for hours and at that moment the reason to order the areas where the instinct has overflowed intervenes. I tell you that I build the paint with spots and strokes, not with lines as usual, in my case the color builds the shape.

In art nothing is acquired by inheritance, you take shapes and create your own symbols, you conquer, you discover, you accept, you recreate until you reach your own language.
Painting unites me and irreparably separates me from society, it is a solitary act, which obeys the dictates of the heart and sometimes neglects even what you love.
The proper vibration of colors motivates me to exhaust the possibilities of a single color; A test of asceticism that in the end becomes abundant, because they create pink, yellow and mauve universes.

About
José Gotopo

José Gotopo was born in Coro, city of the Falcón State in Venezuela, on August 4, 1964. He is a poet of color and form.

The line of the drawing generates the background of the form and the play of color enhances or hides the atmospheres of the plastic object as a whole. From that universe emerge as shades human faces, innocent and evil girls, female birds, female pigeons, large and small species of inhabitants of the sea, still lifes and gallant scenes. Earthly women who fly, birds that walk, roosters that are suspended in the air.

"Painting is a transmission channel that unites me to the world of my childhood, every time I see one of my paintings I feel that the child I was is still alive. " J. Gotopo

About my artwork

The passion for gestural brushstroke brings me closer to expressionism, but in my painting, no character screams. The other half is the reflective element that links me to the Surrealists and finally the exaggerated forms typical of Baroque painting whose ideal of beauty is not proportion, but character, energy, and expression.

As it is a poetic system, shapes, and colors in metaphors, in painting every shape expresses a meaning, it is the shapes that explain the painting, not the painter's ideas or intentions.

Inspiration

The myths that obsess me, what I see and what I dream, my flights and my shortcomings, what I love, and what terrifies me, my doubts and my passions, are realities that I have to find at the bottom of the canvas that I am painting. All these forms should come naturally from the picture. The composition will tell me which symbols I must present there; that is, I do not introduce elements on a whim.

The characters that surge in my painting emerge from the deep layers of my unconscious. They are inhabitants of the oral culture of my ancestors. The elves live in my memory thanks to the fabulous stories told by my grandfather Adolfo. The damsels are an everlasting tribute to the Russian painter Marc Chagall, and to the worshipers of the Coro churches.

Studies

I studied Painting at the Tito Salas School of Plastic Arts in 1979.

Between 1980 and 1984 I participated in the Tejas Libre Art Workshop in Choir, and in 1986 I studied Painting, Drawing, and Engraving at the Neptalí Rincón de Maracaibo Academy of Fine Arts.

In 1994 I obtained a degree in Plastic Arts at the Cecilio Acosta University in Maracaibo, and in 1995-2000-2001 I studied at The Art Student League of New York, with professors Catherin Redmon and William Shart.

In 2004 I obtained a Bachelor of Education from the Cecilio Acosta University in Maracaibo. I currently teach painting at the Experimental Art Faculty of the University of Zulia.

Artistic trajectory

For more than 40 years, my life has revolved around painting, a wild vocation that provokes in me an appetite for the visual that could be translated with just one word: fascination.
